We cannot stop an earthquake or tsunami from happening, but what we aim to do is to lessen the loss of life from these tragic events when they occur.

We want to give people as much warning as possible of these events. Technology has grown into a comprehensive network known as the Pacific Tsunami Warning System (PTWS). Twenty-four seismic stations dotted throughout the Pacific monitor earthquake activity, measuring their magnitudes, which can be used to help calculate the risk of tsunamis along the Pacific coastline. To detect a massive landslide on La Palma, which will cause a mega tsunami in the North Atlantic, our satellite, linked system will notify everyone who is registered within minutes.

What a huge difference a warning sent directly to cell phones and hotels would have made to people on holiday on the beaches in Thailand at Christmas 2004.  If it was your family and friends wouldn’t you want them to have been warned?
